It’s summer in Pakistan (already!) but that doesn’t mean you need to pack your style sense away. Come out of hibernation with a sense of style adventure, which we recently witnessed at an Alkaram show held at the Karachi Parsi Institute. We saw Alkaram’s spring/summer’22 collection put out in a medley of fun styles and here are some we liked best!
The Sari Soiree

In Pakistan, we usually think of the sari as occasion-wear, style for celebrations, such as a graduation party, a formal evening out or even a grand valima. The sari does play another role though; it works it’s very best as light and breezy summer wear. So many of us buy lawn suits and make very little use of the dupatta. Whether the dupatta is lawn or chiffon, you can turn it into a sari (if you choose to buy 2 lawn sets as you’ll need 6 yards for the sari) or then work out a half sari with one lawn set. For the sari you can use the trouser or shirt fabric for your blouse and petticoat or then get the best of both and go for a kurta shalwar too!
The Summer Dress
Long and loose dresses should be a summer staple.
Given the long summer we endure in Pakistan, it’s a wonder that the summer dress hasn’t picked up more popularity, especially since it can be very modest too. If you’re one to experiment, then pick up a citrusy print and turn it into a cool summer dress. Wear it as is or with tights, to avoid a see-through moment!
The Jacket & Cape
Not all heroes wear capes but you will be fashion’s hero if you do!Turn the heat up with this one!
If you’re anything like us, you’ll fall in love with the dupatta but will look for innovative ways to wearing it. You’ll want to be stylish and modest too. The answer to this is the trendy jacket or cape, which serves the purpose while adding much loved drama.
Fiery Fusion
Fusion, not confusion!
There’s no need to be stuck in the style that is suggested on the catalogue, the 3-piece jora that you’ll possibly bump into many women wearing. Go for interesting fusion, like this pantsuit in a pop of summer colours. You could wear and work this look anywhere in the world; add sleeves if you don’t want to go bare arm!
The Kaftan
How cool is this kaftan?
Last but not least, given the fine finish on Al Karam lawn, the fabric works so well for styles that need drape and flow. Kaftans, again, are a bit of fusion but look so good in summer. A longer kaftan will not need trousers and a shorter one can be styled like a tunic, with pants. See how it’s done and try doing it yourself! Belt up for added oomph.
