Sang e Mah aims to address a social evil called “Ghag”

Sang e Mar Mar starring a number of talented actors was one of the biggest hits of 2016. Five years later, director Saife Hasan shared that the drama is being made into a trilogy and the first one to be aired will be Sang e Mah. The news came as a delight for the fans and so far, the teasers released have only increased the anticipation. According to YouTube’s description, Sang e Mah is a transcendent tale of love and retribution. Written by Mustafa Afridi, it is produced by Momina Duraid Productions. Apart from the cast, the plot is also making headlines. According to a post by Hania Aamir who will be essaying the role of Gul Meena, the drama  aims to address a social evil called “ghag”.   She took to Instagram to explain that ghag is a custom in which “a man lays claims to a woman to marry her by force.” Describing it as a “social evil,” she said ghag is “destructive” and has ruined many lives. “This is done in many ways. Sometimes the ‘wanting to be’ groom fires several gunshots outside the woman’s house claiming her for marriage,” wrote Hania. The actor shared that it is an announcement which “insinuates that this girl is my bride’ and anyone else who tries to send a proposal “will meet a distasteful fate”. She wrote this using the Sang e Mah hashtag in her caption. In the teaser released earlier, singer turned actor, Atif who will be seen playing the role of Hilmand raises his weapon to fire outside Gul Meena’s house.     The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly in 2013 passed a law declaring the custom of ghag an offence punishable with up to seven years imprisonment or Rs500,000 fine or both. Ghag is a centuries-old tradition and Sang e Mah narrates the story of a family belonging to the tribal areas of Pakistan whose traditional values are prioritized over love and even their lives.
