Marvel Studios has released the first footage for its upcoming live-action series, Ms. Marvel. Written by comedian and screenwriter Bisha K. Ali, the series is scheduled to release in 2022.
Ms. Marvel stars Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan, the Pakistani-American teenager-turned-elastic superheroine. The teaser features the first Muslim/Pakistani superhero and excited fans can finally get to see actor Iman take on the titular character.
Iman plays 16-year-old Kamala Khan, who lives in Jersey City.
Marvel describes Kamala as “an aspiring artist, an avid gamer, and a voracious fan-fiction scribe, she is a huge fan of the Avengers — and one in particular, Captain Marvel. But Kamala has always struggled to find her place in the world — that is until she gets super powers like the heroes she’s always looked up to.”
“It’s not really the brown girls from Jersey City who save the world,” states her voiceover as the teaser opens. “Maybe now they do,” replies her best friend Bruno.
The clip also features a brief shot of Muslims offering their prayers in a mosque.
Ms. Marvel is slated to premiere in the third quarter of 2022 on Disney Plus. The teaser was exclusively screened during a Disney+ Day 2021 day event. Ms. Marvel’s episodes are directed by Adil El Arbi & Bilall Fallah, Meera Menon, and Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy.
The cast includes Zenobia Shroff and Mohan Kapur as Kamala’s parents Muneeba and Yusuf, as well as Aramis Knight, Rish Shah, Saagar Shaikh, and Matt Lintz.
